On This Day:
Wednesday May 28, 2014

This is the 148th day of the year, with 217 days remaining in 2014.

Fact of the Day: decathlon

The decathlon is a two-day athletic competition consisting of ten track-and-field events. The first day's events are the 100-Meter Dash, Long Jump, Shot Put, High Jump, and 400 Meter Dash; they are followed on the second day by the 110 Meter Hurdles, Discus Throw, Pole Vault, Javelin Throw, and 1500 Meter Run. The decathlon was introduced at the Olympic Games in 1912 and was first won by American athlete Jim Thorpe, who was also the pentathlon champion. However, in 1913 an investigation by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) showed that Thorpe had played semiprofessional baseball in 1909 and 1910, which should have disqualified him from Olympic competition. He was subsequently deprived of his gold medals. In 1982, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) restored his name to the Olympic record books. The winner of the Olympic decathlon is sometimes called "the World's Greatest Athlete."
