clavo, noun
nail

El clavo is the basic word for a nail of the kind you hammer in to something.

Colgadas de un clavo había dos llaves grandes y oxidadas.
Hanging from a nail were two large, rusty keys.

The word is used in a similar image to English, when you say or do something correct or appropriate: dar en el clavo:

Ha dado en el clavo presentando a su plan de empleo.
He was spot on in presenting his employment plan.
Su pregunta da en el clavo.
Her question hits the nail on the head.
