Fact of the Day: U.S. armed forces

The purpose of armed forces has always been the same: to protect and defend, and sometimes to conquer. The various components of the United States armed forces have differing responsibilities and provide different services. The first regular U.S. fighting force, the Continental Army, was organized by the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1775, to supplement local militia forces in the imminent American Revolution (1775-1783). The Continental Navy was established by the Second Continental Congress on October 13, 1775, to supply and support the Continental Army during the Revolution.
