On This Day:
Saturday May 17, 2014

This is the 137th day of the year, with 228 days remaining in 2014.

Fact of the Day: caves

Caves are naturally occurring chambers formed in rock. There are many different types, some of which contain hidden lakes and waterfalls. Caves can be found in many terrains, from the sea to glaciers. Stalactites (downward) and stalagmites (upward) are calcium deposits formed when droplets of water partially evaporate in the caves, often over thousands of years. Caves can also be called caverns, but cavern more accurately refers to an extensive network of giant caves.
