Fact of the Day: Richard Nixon's enemies list

Former president Richard M. Nixon had an "enemies list," including prominent politicians, journalists, entertainers, academics, and others. He used federal agencies to harass them. The list, compiled in 1971 by Charles Colson, White House Special Counsel, was officially known as "Opponents List" and "Political Enemies Project." The original memo consisted of the following 20 names: Arnold M. Picker, Alexander E. Barkan, Ed Guthman, Maxwell Dane, Charles Dyson, Howard Stein, Allard Lowenstein, Morton Halperin, Leonard Woodcock, S. Sterling Munro, Jr., Bernard T. Feld, Sidney Davidoff, John Conyers, Samuel M. Lambert, Stewart Rawlings Mott, Ronald Dellums, Daniel Schorr, S. Harrison Dogole, Paul Newman, and Mary McGrory. The list was later expanded to include the names of some prominent celebrities, media people, businesspeople, businesses, and organizations.
