necktie, tie

They’re less popular than they used to be, but sometimes you need to wear a necktie, una corbata. As with other items of clothing, the basic verb you use is llevar:

Llevaba una corbata roja.
He was wearing a red necktie.

If you have to go somewhere formal, it’s worth asking the question:

¿Hay que ir de corbata?
Do you have to wear a necktie?

Note the construction with de which is used in the next example as well:

Habia venido de corbata.
He was wearing a necktie.

To take your necktie off, the verb you use is quitarse.

Se quitó la corbata para estar más cómodo.
He took off his necktie to make himself more comfortable.
