Ocean currents constitute the horizontal and vertical circulation system produced by gravity, wind friction, and water density variation in different parts of the ocean. The Coriolis forces, exerted by the rotating earth on all moving objects at or near its surface, cause ocean currents to move clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and counterclockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.
