On This Day:
Sunday May 11, 2014

This is the 131st day of the year, with 234 days remaining in 2014.

Fact of the Day: paper

Paper takes its name from papyrus, a reedlike plant that the ancient Egyptians used to make the first writing material. Today most paper is made from pulped wood from trees. We consume an enormous amount of it: a forest equivalent to the size of Sweden needs to be felled each year to support the world's use of paper. The first paper-making machine was invented in 1798 by Frenchman Nicholas-Louis Robert. The average American uses about 800 pounds of paper and paper products per year.
