On This Day:
Monday May 26, 2014

This is the 146th day of the year, with 219 days remaining in 2014.

Fact of the Day: allergies

An allergy is any hypersensitivity reaction by the body to a foreign substance (antigen). Many allergies are reactions to foods, pollens, animals, or microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, or parasites. Allergens (allergy-causing substances) can be airborne, like dust, lint, and smoke, or they can be things one comes in contact with, such as chemicals, dyes, and poisonous plants. Even heat, cold, and light - as from the sun - can be allergens. Dark-colored cats are four times more likely than light-colored ones to cause intense allergic reactions. Some people with tree pollen allergies might have a "cross-reaction" to fruits such as cherries, apples, pears, and peaches. Cow's milk causes more allergies than any other food.
