phillumenist Audio Pronunciation
Share on Twitter Share on Facebook Share on Google+
\fi-LOO-muh-nist\
noun
1. a collector of matchbooks and matchboxes.
Quotes
McDevitt's collecting of matchboxes might sound idiosyncratic, but it's a hobby popular enough that there's an actual term for it—phillumeny, which roughly translates from the Greek and Latin to "lover of light." Hundreds of phillumenist sites have cropped up on the web, saving these designs from obsolescence.
-- Carey Dunne, "Exquisite Matchbox Art Proves Smaller Is Better," Fast Company, December 9, 2014
Origin
Phillumenist Phillumenist came to English in the mid-1900s from the Greek philos meaning "loving," the Latin lūmen meaning "light." The suffix –ist denotes a person who practices or is concerned with something.

codo, noun
elbow

Los codos are your elbows.

Apoyó los codos en las rodillas y se concentró en la lectura.
She leant her elbows on her knees and concentrated on reading.

I wonder if you’ve noticed how often Spanish and English use different colorful phrases to express similar ideas. If you talk a lot in English it’s a blue streak, or nineteen to the dozen, but in Spanish, it’s hablar por los codos:

Habla por los codos y me ha mareado.
He talks a blue streak and he’s made my head spin.
