Wool is often stretched during yarn or fabric manufacture and may undergo relaxation shrinkage in washing, with fibers resuming their normal shape. Felting shrinkage occurs when wet fibers, subjected to mechanical action, become matted into packed masses. Sheep don't experience this because the wool has not been stretched -- and wool grease contains lanolin.
