caliente, adjective
warm; hot

Caliente is one of those Spanish words that cover two English concepts: both hot and warm. This may sound potentially confusing, but it’s always clear from the context what Spanish speakers mean.

El plato está muy caliente.
The plate’s very hot.

Putting bien in front of caliente intensifies the idea of ‘hot’:

Sírvalo bien caliente.
Serve it piping hot.

To convey the idea of warm, caliente is often used in the form calentito:

Me gusta el pan calentito.
I like my bread nice and warm.
