On This Day:
Wednesday June 4, 2014

This is the 155th day of the year, with 210 days remaining in 2014.

Fact of the Day: Popsicle

Frank Epperson is credited with inventing the Popsicle. The idea came to him in 1905 when he was only 11 years old. He left a stir stick in a fruit-flavored mixture of soda powder and water overnight and it froze. Though the frozen pop was born that day, it took many years before Epperson began manufacturing Popsicles. He received a patent for the frozen treat in 1924 and called it the "Ep-sicle," a combination of "Epperson" and "icicle," changing the name to "Popsicle" after his children began asking for "Pop's sicles." The sticks used in Popsicles were originally made from birch wood. The twin Popsicle debuted during the Great Depression. Epperson sold the rights to the name "Popsicle" in 1925, and they are currently held by Good Humor.
