Fact of the Day: amino acids

Amino acids are organic compounds containing an amino group and a carboxylic acid group. They are biochemical building blocks. Proteins, for example, are made up of various combinations of about 20 common amino acids encoded by the standard genetic code. More than 100 amino acids have been found in nature, but only the 20 are commonly used in protein synthesis and they are the same in all living organisms, from protozoa to plants and animals.
