rallar, verb
to grate

Another cooking word it’s useful to know is rallar, to grate. You can apply it to all the things for which you use grate in English, especially queso, cheese.

una cucharadita de parmesano rallado
a teaspoonful of grated Parmesan
coco rallado
grated coconut

Where Spanish differs from English is that pan rallado, word for word ‘grated bread’, means breadcrumbs.

Pasarlos por el huevo batido con sal y pimienta, y después por el pan rallado.
Dip them in the seasoned beaten egg, and then in the breadcrumbs.

To grate anything, you will need the derived word un rallador, a grater.
