Fact of the Day: cabbage

Cabbage is a widely cultivated vegetable of the family Cruciferae. Wild or sea cabbage, a perennial with broad, thick curly leaves, first grew in coastal regions of western Europe and was originally valued for its medicinal properties. Through cultivation and selection, white, green, and red varieties of cabbage were produced, as well as many other related vegetables - including broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower. The word cabbage, which entered English around 1440, is ultimately derived from Latin caput, "head."
