Fact of the Day: Harriet the Tortoise Harriet the Tortoise is one of the world's oldest (recorded) living animals. DNA testing performed on the giant Galapagos tortoise suggested that she was born around 1830. She died in 2006 at the Australia Zoo at the ripe old of age of 176. It is believed that in 1835, Harriet belonged to Charles Darwin and was studied by him, leading to his theories of evolution and natural selection. Harriet's original name was Harry, as she was mistakenly thought to be a male for more than 100 years.
