Fact of the Day: camouflage creatures Animals have evolved different colors, patterns, and shapes that help them survive. Animals such as lapwings and polar bears are camouflaged - colored or patterned in such a way that they blend in with their surroundings. Camouflage helps animals hide from predators, but it can also help predators sneak up on their prey. A bird's color often harmonizes with its nest, and some ground-nesting birds conceal their eggs by choosing a nest site whose surroundings are of a color similar to that of their eggs. Camouflage also includes disruptive coloration and disguise. Disruptive coloration consists of irregular patches of contrasting colors and tones in the animal's coat, diverting attention from the shape of the animal and making it harder to recognize; examples are the giraffe and tiger. Disguise is a combination of color, form, and posture that can replicate a commonplace object; examples are the praying mantis and stick insect.
