On This Day:
Tuesday January 28, 2014

This is the 28th day of the year, with 337 days remaining in 2014.

Fact of the Day: pronoun

A pronoun is a word used instead of a noun to indicate someone or something already known or mentioned; it therefore has no independent meaning and derives its meaning from elsewhere. Deictic pronouns take some of their meaning from context, e.g., the pronoun you, whose meaning changes according to who is speaking and who is being addressed. Anaphoric pronouns take some of their meaning from a previous part of what is said or written, e.g., in I put the cheese dip where everyone could see it, the pronoun it refers to cheese dip, its antecedent. The different types of pronouns include personal, relative, intensive, reflexive, interrogative, and demonstrative. The word pronoun comes from Latin pronomen, from pro- "for, in place of" and nomen "name."
