diferente, adjective
different; several, various

Diferente is one of the two words you can use to convey the idea of different. You can use it instead of distinto, but it is not quite as common:

los diferentes grupos políticos
different political groups

When one thing is different from another, you use either de or a:

Una novela es diferente a un cuadro.
A novel is different from or than a painting.
La cultura peruana es muy diferente de la chilena.
Peruvian culture is very different from Chilean culture.

In the plural, diferentes means several or various:

Por aquí han pasado diferentes personalidades.
Several or various celebrities have been here.
