Fact of the Day: Seven Wonders of the Natural World The seven surviving natural wonders of the world are unique and amazing in their own special way and have puzzled humankind for generations. The existing Seven Wonders are: the Grand Canyon, the Northern Lights, Mount Everest, Paricutin Volcano, the Harbor at Rio de Janeiro, Victoria Falls, and the Great Barrier Reef. However, the best-known and traditional Seven Wonders of the World are those listed by a writer in the second century BC named Antipater of Sidon, and by a later but unknown observer in the same century who claimed to be the mathematician Philon of Byzantium. These include the Pyramids of Giza, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes, and the Pharos of Alexandria. The Pyramids of Giza, the oldest wonder on the original list, is the only one of the seven that is still substantially in existence today.

1967 - Albert DeSalvo, who claimed to be the "Boston Strangler," was convicted in Massachusetts of armed robbery, assault and sex offenses. He was sentenced to life and killed by a fellow inmate in 1973.
1978 - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) isolated the cause of Legionnaire's disease.
1991 - After 62 years in service, Eastern Air Lines shuts down, citing financial problems.
1993 - The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday was observed in all 50 states for the first time.
