On This Day:
Sunday January 12, 2014

This is the 12th day of the year, with 353 days remaining in 2014.

Fact of the Day: sword swallowing

Sword swallowing is not a trick or illusion; a sword swallower actually swallows the sword. The feat probably dates back thousands of years to India, where it was developed by fakirs and shaman priests to demonstrate their invulnerability, power, and connection with their gods. From India, sword swallowing made its way to ancient Greece and Rome, where it was performed at festivals. A sword swallower must train and practice a great deal in order to overcome the gag reflex, and some sword swallowers ingest a tube prior to their performance in order to help guide the sword so the trick is less dangerous.
