On This Day:
Monday January 6, 2014

This is the 6th day of the year, with 359 days remaining in 2014.

Fact of the Day: coins

In 2004, approximately 13.6 billion coins were minted in the United States for general circulation. The first coin to include the inscription "In God We Trust" was the two-cent coin minted between 1864 and 1873. In 1955, legislation made the inscription of "In God We Trust" mandatory on all coins and paper currency of the United States. There is also a statute making it illegal to damage or deface coins for a fraudulent purpose. However, while the U.S. Mint does not promote coloring, plating, or altering U.S. coins, it is not illegal to do so and there are no sanctions against such activity as long as there is no fraudulent intent. According to the United States Mint's 2000 report, the approximate cost of producing U.S. coins is as follows: penny = .81 of a cent; nickel = 3.13 cents; dime = 1.88 cents; quarter = 4.29 cents; half dollar = 9.63 cents; golden dollar = 10.03 cents.
