Fact of the Day: hydrogen Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the visible universe and makes up approximately 90% of all matter. It was the first element to form when the Big Bang took place. Hydrogen is also the simplest and lightest member of the family of chemical elements. In 1766, British physicist and chemist Henry Cavendish was the first scientist to recognize hydrogen as a distinct substance. Cavendish also described the composition of water as a combination of hydrogen and oxygen. The symbol for hydrogen is H and its atomic number is 1.
