Nobody likes to be called 'old', in Spanish as in English, and that's where anciano can be useful. You often use it in contexts where in English you would use 'old'.

cuentan los más ancianos del lugar que ...
the oldest inhabitants of the place say that ...
niños, ancianos y mujeres
children, older people and women
