Fact of the Day: gold

Gold has unique qualities which make it one of the most valuable metals to humans. The content of gold alloys is expressed in 24ths, called karats. Pure gold is 24-karat gold, 12-karat gold is 50% gold, and 18-karat gold is 75% gold. Fort Knox has an estimated 147.3 million ounces of gold. The size of a standard gold bar is 7" x 3 5/8" x 1 3/4"; its weight is approximately 400 oz., or 27.5 lbs.

1968 - Former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, widow of John F. Kennedy, married Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis.
1973 - In the so-called "Saturday Night Massacre," special Watergate prosecutor Archibald Cox was dismissed and Attorney General Elliot L. Richardson and Deputy Attorney General William B. Ruckelshaus resigned.
1973 - After fifteen years of construction, the Sydney Opera House, designed by Danish architect John Utzon, was officially opened .
