Fact of the Day: melons Melons are the roundish fruit of several types of trailing vine or climbing plant, part of the diverse gourd family. All have a hard rind and sweet juicy flesh, usually with a mass of seeds at the center. Melons originated in Asia and were known in China by 1000 BC. The three main groups are musk (or netted or nutmeg), cantaloupe, and winter melons. Plants resembling true melons include the watermelon.
