vela, noun
candle

In Spanish as in English there's nothing more romantic or splendid than the light of candles:

la gran cena a la luz de las velas en su honor
the candlelit gala dinner in his honor

But there's a darker side to the word vela as well. It also means when you can't get to sleep, especially in the phrase pasar la noche en vela to stay up all night or to have a sleepless night

Pasábamos las noches en vela, platicando hasta el amanecer.
We would stay up all night, chatting till dawn.
Había pasado tres noches en vela atormentado por el dolor de muela.
She had spent three sleepless nights in agony with toothache.
