pobre, adjective
poor

Like English poor, pobre has several shades of meaning. It can refer to not being rich:

una familia pobre
a poor family

It can also refer to something such as a country or a diet, which is poor in something:

un país pobre en recursos, como Cuba
a country which is poor in resources, such as Cuba
pobre en carbohidratos
poor in carbohydrates

You also use pobre to express your pity or compassion for someone. In this case, it comes before the word it modifies:

Me da pena, el pobre hombre.
I feel sorry for the poor man.

Notice how you use de in these next phrases:

pobre de mí/ti/él
poor me/you/him
