Yesterday's Word - Previous Words - Help

encima, adverb
on; on top of

Encima is a very useful word for describing where something is. In the phrase encima de you can use it to mean on or on top of:

Lo dejé encima de la mesa.
I left it on the table.
Mi maleta está encima del armario.
My case is on top of the wardrobe.

When there is no contact between the two objects described, you translate encima as above:

Colgó el cuadro encima del sofá.
He hung the painting over the sofa.

You also often use encima without de, especially when talking about whether you have something on you. The verbs you use are llevar or tener.

No tengo dinero encima.
I haven’t got any money on me.
No llevaba la documentación encima.
I didn’t have the papers on me.
