flor, noun
flower

The basic meaning of la flor is flower.

un ramo de flores
a bunch of flowers

To describe a tree or a plant in flower, Spanish constructs the phrase in the same way as English, en flor:

una noche de primavera bajo los castaños en flor
a spring night beneath the chestnut trees in flower

But you also use flor metaphorically, to describe something which is the best of its kind:

la flor del ejército
the elite of the army

Notice the idiomatic phrase la flor y nata de, the cream of:

la flor y nata de la sociedad mexicana
the cream of Mexican society
la flor y nata del espectáculo
the cream of show business
