echar, verb
to put

Apart from the idea of throwing something somewhere, another core concept behind echar is that of putting something somewhere.

He echado otra manta en la cama.
I’ve put another blanket on the bed.
¿Te echo manteca en el pan?
Shall I put some butter on your bread?

In this meaning, you use it to talk about putting gas in your automobile:

Tengo que echar gasolina.
I need to fill up.

And you use it to ask how much sugar somebody takes in their coffee:

¿Cuánto azúcar le echas al café?
How many sugars do you take in your coffee?
