conquistar, verb
to conquer; to win over

Spanish conquistar has a literal meaning which is obvious from its similarity to English conquer:

España es uno de los países conquistados por los Romanos.
Spain is one of the countries conquered by the Romans.

From this meaning come two others. Conquistar can refer to winning a sporting title:

Sigue siendo favorito para conquistar el título.
She is still favorite to win the title.

And it can refer to winning someone over:

La conquistó con su sonrisa.
He won her over with his smile.
