tormenta, noun
storm

Una tormenta means a storm, even though it looks rather like the English word ‘torment’.

Las nubes de tormenta se acercaban.
The storm clouds were getting nearer.

La tormenta can also be used metaphorically, to refer to a storm, for instance in politics:

La noticia provocó una tormenta política sin precedentes.
The news caused an unprecedented political storm.

Una tormenta en un vaso de agua is a tempest in a teapot, or British a storm in a teacup (word for word, ‘a storm in a glass of water’).
