sacar, verb
to get, to obtain; to take

In an earlier Spanish Word of the Day we looked at the very common verb sacar, which translates to take out in lots of different contexts. For example,

Voy a sacar dinero del cajero automático.
I’m going to take some money out of the ATM.

Another very common meaning of sacar is to get. It’s the word you use when getting tickets for a show or the movies:

Voy a sacar las entradas.
I’ll get the tickets.

And it’s also the verb you use when talking about the marks or grades you get in class.

Siempre saca buenas notas.
She always gets good marks.

A very useful phrase with sacar is sacar una foto a alguien to take a photo of somebody:

Nos sacaron muchas fotos.
They took a lot of photographs of us.

¿Te saco una foto?
Shall I take a photograph of you?
