Yesterday's Word - Previous Words - Help

uña, noun
nail

La uña usually refers to a fingernail:

Antes se mordía las uñas.
He used to bite his nails.

But it can also refer to your toenails:

una uña encarnada
an ingrown toenail

When people start to get vicious in an argument or confrontation, and metaphorically show their teeth, the phrase in Spanish is sacar las uñas, word for word to show your nails:

No dudan en sacar las uñas cuando les hace falta.
They are not slow to show their teeth when they need to.
