relato, noun
story; report

The idea behind relato is that of telling somebody something. So, it can mean a made up story, often a short story:

un libro de relatos breves
a collection of short stories
bajo la apariencia de un relato de aventuras
under the guise of an adventure story

The other meaning of un relato is a report on something:

según el relato del ministro en el Congreso
according to the minister’s report to Congress

If it’s not a formal report, un relato may be an account of something:

un relato pormenorizado del crimen
a detailed account of the crime
