Yesterday's Word - Previous Words - Help

toalla, noun
towel

Another indispensable item round the house, or on the beach, is una toalla, a towel. If the Spanish word looks and sounds similar to the English word, it’s because they both ultimately come from an old Germanic word, thwahlja.

de regalo: un magnífico toallade playa
a fantastic free beach towel
Se secaba la cabeza con una toalla.
He was drying his hair with a towel.

If you give up doing something, or trying to do something, in Spanish you throw in the towel, just as in English. You can use either tirar or arrojar.

Estuvo a punto de arrojar la toalla.
He was on the point of throwing in the towel.
Aseguró que no tira la toalla.
She told people she was not throwing in the towel.
