Yesterday's Word - Previous Words - Help

sal, noun
salt

Some endings of nouns in Spanish reflect the gender of the word. If a word ends in -ción, for instance, you can be sure it is feminine.

la emoción
emotion
la canción
song

When nouns end in the letter -l, though, they can be masculine or feminine. So it is best to learn the gender of each one as you come across it. The word for salt, la sal, is feminine:

con muy poca sal
with very little salt

But another common word ending in -l you probably know already - el árbol, tree - is masculine.

un árbol de Navidad
a Christmas tree
