Fact of the Day: doctor

Doctor (the word) comes from Latin for "teacher" and though it is now synonymous with physician. It was not until the 14th century that the doctor's degree began to be conferred in medicine.

1831 - Nat Turner launched a bloody slave insurrection in Southampton County, Virginia, hoping to lead his people out of slavery.
1858 - The famous debates, mainly about slavery, between Senatorial contenders Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas began.
1878 - The American Bar Association was founded, in Saratoga, New York.
1901 - The Cadillac Motor Company was formed in Detroit, Michigan, named after the French explorer, Antoine Cadillac.
