On This Day:
Tuesday April 1, 2014

This is the 91st day of the year, with 274 days remaining in 2014.

Fact of the Day: baseball cards

The first nationally distributed baseball cards were made by Goodwin & Co. of New York City in 1887 and inserted by cigarette makers into packs of cigarettes and tobacco. Goodwin issued the "Old Judge" card, a small picture card that was inserted into packs of Old Judge brand tobacco to stiffen the packs and to boost sales. In order to compete, other tobacco companies began placing cards in their packs as well. All of these cards were much smaller than the cards of today and remain extremely rare and valuable. One of the most famous tobacco-issued baseball cards is the 1909 T-206 Honus Wagner card. It has sold at auctions for over $1 million. Topps Company began to produce baseball cards in 1951.
