They are probably a hybrid between the pomelo and the orange that occurred accidentally in Barbados in the mid-1700s; no records have been found of any deliberate hybridization between the two plants. Although grapefruits taste nothing like grapes, they grow in clusters and look like large yellow grapes on the branch; they were smaller than today's grapefruits - about the size of an orange - when the fruit was given its name. A single grapefruit tree can produce 1300 to 1500 pounds of fruit in a productive year. The grapefruit first came to America in the 1820s and did not become a commercial success until the 1880s. Florida is the largest grapefruit producer in the world.
