Fact of the Day: beauty products Beauty products, also called cosmetics, include any of several preparations applied to the human body for beautifying, preserving, or altering the appearance, or for cleansing, coloring, conditioning, or protecting the skin, hair, nails, lips, eyes, or teeth. The earliest cosmetics known to archaeologists were in use in Egypt in the fourth millennium BC, taking the form of eye makeup and scented unguents. The desire to be beautiful is as old as civilization and today the beauty product business is worth an estimated $160 billion globally. Americans spend more on beauty products than they do on education.
