Ocupación is a formal word to describe someone’s job. It’s the kind of word an official would use, and it’s the one used on passports and forms.

¿Cuál es su ocupación?
What do you do for a living?

Ocupación can be used to talk about the general sense of employment:

Para crear ocupación es necesario un crecimiento económico.
To create employment it’s necessary to have economic growth.

It’s also used to talk about people’s activities:

mujeres que abandonaban sus ocupaciones habituales
women who gave up their normal activities
