to leaf through, to flick through

Some idioms are the same in Spanish as in English, and hojear is one of them. In English if you leaf through something, the image is of leaves of a book. Similarly hojear comes from the Spanish for leaf, hoja.

Se puso a hojear el periódico.
She started to leaf through or flick through the paper.

Here’s a literary quote, where the wind is turning the pages:

Un empujón de la brisa volvió a hojear las páginas de la revista.
A sudden gust of wind ruffled the pages of the magazine again.
