On This Day:
Thursday March 6, 2014

This is the 65th day of the year, with 300 days remaining in 2014.

Fact of the Day: marsupials

Marsupials are a mammalian order (or superorder) characterized by premature birth and continued development of the newborn while attached to the nipples on the lower belly of the mother. The pouch, or marsupium, from which the group takes its name, is a flap of skin covering the nipples. More than 100 species of marsupial are found only in Australia, including the kangaroo, koala, wallaby, and wombat. About 70 species are distributed more widely, though only two families of marsupials are found in the Americas - the opossums and the ratlike marsupials of South America.
