On This Day:
Monday June 2, 2014

This is the 153rd day of the year, with 212 days remaining in 2014.

Fact of the Day: poison ivy

Global warming may make poison ivy grow bigger and more potent. Around 70-80% of people are allergic to urushiol, the oily substance found in poison ivy that causes the itchy rash. You can get a poison ivy rash by touching a poison ivy plant, touching a pet with sap on its fur, being near burning poison ivy plants, or by touching clothes or garden tools that touched poison ivy. If you come in contact with poison ivy, you have only about ten minutes to wash with soap and water before the urushiol binds with your skin and starts a reaction. You cannot get a poison ivy rash by touching someone else's oozing rash or scratching a rash elsewhere on your own body.
