alto, adjective
tall; high

Like many Spanish words, alto conveys the meaning of two English words. It covers both tall and high.

Es un chico muy alto.
He’s a very tall boy.
un edificio muy alto
a very tall building

You can translate alto as high in both the literal sense:

la montaña más alta del mundo
the highest mountain in the world

and in the non-literal sense:

Sacó notas altas en todos los exámenes.
He got high marks in all his exams.
