Yesterday's Word - Previous Words - Help

convertirse, verb
to become

Many basic Spanish words are reflexive, even though there is no obvious way in which the action ‘reflects back’ on the performer. In an earlier Spanish Word of the Day we had ponerse, meaning to become. Convertirse is another word with a similar meaning. Convertirse is generally used with a noun.

Con la empresa se ha convertido en millonario.
He’s become a millionaire through the company.
Amenaza con convertirse en una gran estrella mundial.
She looks set to become a major worldwide star.

Sometimes your plans or dreams can come true, in which case you also need convertirse:

Sus deseos están muy cerca de convertirse en realidad.
Their wishes are close to coming true.
