tomar, verb
to take

Tomar is used in many of the same contexts as English to take. To take something physically:

No te olvides* de tomar las pastillas.
Don’t forget to take the pills.

Si no tienes bolígrafo, toma éste.
If you haven’t got a pen, take this one.

Or in a less literal sense:

Es él quien toma todas las decisiones aquí.
He’s the one who takes all the decisions here.

Me ha tomado unas fotos sensacionales.
He took some fantastic photos of me.

Notice the use of the reflexive in the following phrase, where the meaning is also to take in a less literal sense:

Se tomó la amenaza muy en serio.
He took the threat very seriously.

Se lo está tomando muy a mal.
She’s taking it very badly.
